THIRD versus 17th would rarely be seen as a riveting contest, but Hawthorn-Monash University produced probably its best performance of the Premier Cricket season on Saturday, finding itself well in the game at the close of day one against the fancied Carlton.
Losing the toss on a flat Carlton wicket, the Hawks' woes were compounded with an opening stand of 66. The initial breakthrough was provided by Rod Bird, and a wicket shortly after by Dale Tormey reduced Carlton to 2-71.
Carlton took the score to 3-158 but lost its remaining wickets for 38 to be all out for 196. Tormey finished with 5-76 and Lukas Hoogenboom claimed 3-40. In reply, the Hawks lost Aaron Dragwidge for two, then the wicket of Tormey went when he was on six.
At 2-25, things were bleak until Elias Karageorgiou (18 not out) and teenager Josh Henry (27no) steadied the ship. The Hawks finished the day at 2-60 needing another 137 to record the season's biggest upset.
The seconds struggled to 180 at the university; Carlton in reply is 2-154. The thirds and fourths put themselves in reasonable positions accumulating 7-229 and 6-225 respectively.
All games conclude this Saturday.
