A CENTURY and several strong bowling performances were the highlights on day one of round 4 in the Menzies Shield section of the Southern Cricket League on Saturday.

Oakleigh District Footballers' captain Paul Gurr was the grade's only centurymaker when he top scored with 104 in his side's total of 8-235 against Cavaliers.

Reigning premiers Mt Waverley Catholics batting woes continued when they almost singlehandedly bowled out by Chadstone Harlequin's Adam Hebblethwaite, who returned the best bowling figures of the day with 8-58.

Trinity, after a promising start to the season with victories in the first two one-dayers, are finding the going harder in the longer version of the game and will have to bowl well to beat Glen Waverley Cougars, who need just 51 runs to take first-innings points.

St James Malvern Valley have strong chance to record its first win in the League's premier grade, having dismissed Toorak-Prahran for a modest 142. With all wickets in hand, St James needs a further 133 to take the points.
