Logjam in finals quest

01 Feb, 2010 09:49 AM
THE composition of the final four in Menzies Shield is still wide open following the completion of round nine in the Southern Cricket League on Saturday.

Glen Waverley, undefeated and on top of the ladder, is guaranteed a home-ground semi-final, and with two rounds remaining, it is three games clear of its closest rival.

It is the remaining three semi-finals berth that are still up for grabs. Mt Waverley Uniting and Cavaliers are equal second with just percentage separating them.

The surprise packet is the Cavaliers, whose early season form belied their current position. Having lost their first three games, they have won six in a row to keep their finals aspirations alive.

Three sides are in equal forth. Chadstone Harlequin and Notting Hill-Brandon Park suffered losses in the round, while reigning premiers Mt Waverley Catholics are making a late run in the hope of defending their title.

In Mackay Shield, Salesian Old Boys easily head the table and are firm favourites for a grand final flag. The surprise of the round was second-placed St Pauls Glen Waverley's loss to the Cavaliers.

Languishing at the bottom of the ladder, the Cavaliers soundly thrashed St Pauls to win outright, dismissing their opponents for 89 and 86 to win by an innings.
