PREMIER Cricket went to the country on Saturday, but the trip to Euroa to play Frankston brought no joy for Hawthorn-Monash University.
Frankston won the toss in hot and humid conditions and found the going tough against an accurate and disciplined Hawks attack.
Victorian opener Nick Jewell was the major thorn in Hawthorn's side, compiling a patient 74. Without him, the Heat may not have passed 130. As it stood though, 177 was always going to present a significant challenge.
Veteran quick Dale Christie was the pick of the Hawks' bowling, finishing with 2-24 from 9.2 overs, while leg spinner Matthew Hewat claimed 3-30 from his 10 overs.
The Hawks never really mounted a serious challenge in reply. Its three best-performed bats of 2009-10 contributed five runs among them – Dale Tormey (0), Elias Karageourgiou (5) and Rohan Wight (0).
Aaron Dragwidge provided some solid resistance at the top of the order with 41 from 98 balls but there was very little support for him before captain Ben Cookson joined him with the score at a perilous 5-37.
Cookson, who has had a disastrous season with the bat, returned to some form with a gritty 27 from 63 balls.
When Cookson departed with the score on 97 it was all over for the Hawks, who were all out for 119 in the 46th over.
■ There was only joy for the thirds on Saturday with the Hawks compiling 7-234 and dismissing Frankston for 178. The seconds (189) and the fourths (183) were overtaken by Frankston with six wickets in hand.
