A PERSON has died after the truck they were driving struck a sign gantry and exploded on Eastlink this afternoon.
Police believe the collision occurred after the north-bound truck veered across two lanes and hit the median strip gantry, about 300 metres south of the Wellington Road exit in Rowville about 3.15pm.
Journal photographer Wayne Hawkins captured the scene moments after the crash (see Gallery for more pictures).
Intensive care paramedic Gary Robertson said the truck was completely ablaze when he arrived at the scene.
‘‘It appeared the semi trailer had careered through the safety barriers on the median strip before crashing into a pylon about 400 metres down the road.
‘‘The truck had burst into flames and unfortunately one person has been found dead inside the cabin.
‘‘We treated a woman on scene for smoke inhalation. She was in a stable condition and didn’t require transport to hospital.’’
Eastlink’s operator ConnectEast has advised motorists that the road will be closed for up to seven hours in both directions between Monash Freeway and Ferntree Gully Road as it makes repairs to the road.
Motorists travelling at evening peaktime have been advised to exit Eastlink at Ferntree Gully Road (if travelling south) and at Monash Freeway or Princes Highway (if travelling north).
It is believed to be the first fatality on Eastlink since it opened in mid-2008.
Police are investigating the collison and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
