Police vow crackdown in wake of pub brawl

29 Jun, 2009 11:47 AM
POLICE have launched a full investigation into an "appalling level of violence" at a Chadstone brawl in which two men were stabbed.

Witnesses told the Journal up to 30 people could have been involved in a brawl that started inside Matthew Flinders Taverner about 3am on June 20. As bouncers ejected violent patrons, the brawl continued outside on Warrigal Road, leaving two men seriously injured.

A 24-year-old Wantirna South man needed surgery after he was stabbed in the lower back and a 22-year-old Endeavour Hills man was stabbed six times all over his body.

Detective Sergeant Tom Arnot, of Oakleigh police's crime investigation unit, said police were appalled at the level of violence. "We intend to address the increased level of violence being displayed by intoxicated young persons."

He said it was a sad state of affairs when people felt they had to carry knives for personal protection.

Detective Sergeant Arnot said police would increase police patrols to licensed premises at closing times.

They would also look at the age and level of intoxication of patrons leaving licensed clubs and hotels in Monash.

"Police will try to ensure that venues of this nature are a safe place to go and people can come and go without fear of harm."

A Chadstone resident, who did not want to be named, said she saw a group of about 30 people yelling at one another before a fight broke out inside the hotel.

"They were all punching each other. Heaps of them had one or two drinks in their hands, skulling them down. It looked alcohol-driven."

A Glen Waverley resident, who also wished to remain unnamed, said she left about 1am because she was worried about the potential for a fight to break out.

"I could tell the bouncers were getting worried too.

"There were about 80 young people, all in groups, who were so drunk that I thought I should leave."

Matthew Flinders Taverner declined to comment on the incident.

Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
