Generous pupils
OAKLEIGH South Primary School pupils raised funds to combat sudden infant death syndrome on Red Nose Day last Friday. Sisters Ellie, of grade 5 and Bella, of grade 1, whose cousin died of SIDS, asked the school last year if it would take part in Red Nose Day. Teacher Fran Davey said pupils wore red noses and red clothes and made $2 donations.
Woman robbed
POLICE have appealed for witnesses to the assault and robbery of a woman in Clayton last week. About 5pm on June 21, a 28-year-old Clayton woman was walking along Thomas Street near Haughton Road when she was approached from behind by a man who repeatedly punched her to the face. The woman fell to the ground and was kicked several times before the man took off with her handbag. Three witnesses chased the man, with one recovering the woman's handbag in a nearby alley way. Senior Sergeant Tony Carr, of Glen Waverley's Embona task force, said police wanted to speak to the other two witnesses who gave chase but did not return to the scene. The attacker is described as having dark skin. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
Burglary alert
OAKLEIGH police have reminded residents who are going away during the school holidays to leave their house looking like someone's staying in it. Senior Sergeant Gary Ogden said residential burglaries had the capacity to rise during school holiday periods. He said residents who were going away should notify a friend, relative or trusted neighbour. "Make sure your papers and mail are being collected or stopped at the post office. If your mailbox is empty, it will appear as though someone is home." He also reminded drivers to take care on the roads, urging residents who witnessed suspicious activity to call 000.
