Church gay stance 'shock'

29/09/2008 2:36:00 PM
A SYNDAL church welcomes gay parishioners while its leadership still supports a document forbidding homosexuality that it produced 10 years ago.

This month, a US-based blogger known as 'Dangerous Times' posted a document from the Syndal Baptist Church .

A submission by the church to the Baptist Union of Victoria, the document discussed the church's stance on homosexuality.

It stated the Bible forbade homosexual practice, with any violation calling for a "serious response'' and that "unrepentant sinners ought to be removed from the church membership''.

Last week, senior pastor Bill Brown said that while the church would express the views in the document slightly differently, it "would be consistent with the stance that we would take''.

"It was formulated in the mid-'90s and the response is consistent with our understanding of pastorally caring for and responding to people who are pursuing a gay life style.''

Mr Brown said homosexual church members could not hold leadership positions and would be counselled to "help them look at a change of lifestyle''.

"We don't necessarily agree with the lifestyle choices people would make, but Jesus came for all people.

"Everyone is welcome to worship at the Syndal Baptist Church. We certainly have people at Syndal who have a homosexual orientation.''

The blogger, who grew up attending the Syndal Baptist Church, wrote that he was shocked it had a policy "suggesting that gay people are the result of sexual abuse and are somehow in that respect damaged goods''.

"Reading what to me is a message of hatred and dangerous opinions as the church policy of my home has made me feel like I have lost my childhood home, I have lost my family, I have lost my childhood,'' the blogger said.

"All those great memories I have of church as a kid have been destroyed with one document!''

Why the shock? This is a Biblical policy not a Syndal Baptist policy and it should be the policy of all Bible believers. The shock is that too many Christians do not follow what the Bible says about many sinful attitudes today - including both homosexual and heterosexual sex outside marriage. The Bible clearly states that all sexual relationships other than heterosexual married relationships are sin and that any relationship other than that between a man and a woman are unnatural.

Peter it is sad that you believe the Bible clearly says this, as it actually is not clear. The bible is also not a book of 'policy' nor is it one book...it is many many books written by many people. God did not write the bible...it was written by humans and as humans we are all fallible. It is interesting Peter that you mention "homosexual sex outside of marriage" as a sin. Well Peter, many of us 'Homosexuals' would like to be able to get married! Would homosexual sex inside a same-sex marriage be ok to you? It is to many church's around the world!!

If the Bible was written by men, who are fallible, then why bother elevating it at all? Why place it in importance, beyond the written opinion of any yokel with a blog? The Bible is inspired by God; infallible and inerrant. Its why we Christians use it. It IS a book policies (God handed down laws) among other things. The Bible is also clear, to those who would let themselves be guided by the Spirit and place the pleasing of Jesus first, and not themselves.
